Visitors can see churches from the 19th century in the village of Wollombi. Wollombi is 128 kilometres north of Sydney. St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church was built during the 1840s and moved to its present location in the 1890s. St. John’s Anglican Church was built in the 1840s. This sandstone church has beautiful stained glass windows.
The Endeavour Museum in Wollombi is in a stone courthouse that was built in 1866. This museum has exhibits relating to the area’s colonial history.
Grossmann House in Maitland was built in the early 1870s. The house is furnished and decorated in the style of a townhouse from Victorian times. Costumes and textiles are displayed on the first floor.
Pokolbin is about 33 kilometres from Maitland. The variety of cheeses at The Hunter Valley Smelly Cheese Shop in Pokolbin includes cheddar, Danish blue and fetta. Some of the other products sold here are biscuits, chocolates, olive oil and vinegar.
Tinkers Produce is also in Pokolbin. Peaches, plums, nectarines and grapes are sold here. The Moorebank Vineyard is nearby. Visitors can sample several wines here. Sauces and spreads with wine are sold at the vineyard.
Adventurous visitors who want to see Pokolbin and the Hunter Valley from the air can go skydiving at Just Jump Skydive. Hunter Valley Ballooning will take visitors over the vineyards in a balloon.
Goulburn River National Park is on the banks of the Goulburn River. There are places for camping, hiking and swimming. Park visitors are likely to see kangaroos and wombats.
